19 Mile Run with Dave

My brother Dave and I did a 19 mile run this past Saturday. We ran the Bar M Loop and then down the old highway past arches and down into Moab. We were beat! Last week it was about 45-50 degrees for my 17 miler. This week it was about 75-80 degrees in town. We've been using e-Gels for about 2 weeks now. They are an electrolyte gel with about 50 more calories per pack than a Gu. The plus side is I can just drink water instead of sugary Gatorade. I broke out the new shorts on this run. My first "track short" with high split sides. I LOVED them! I'm never looking back.

I have heard lots of bad things about Gato as well. Maybe a good after the run drink but not a before or during. I only drank gato and water during the first 4-5 months I was in Iraq to see if soda had anything to do with my acid reflux. After doing some online research to find out why cutting soda made no difference, I found out that it does in fact have a lot of sugar and that is what was giving me the acid reflux, or helping the cause anyway. So I steered clear of that for a few weeks and stuck with water only and voila, much better, but not all gone.

I will have to check out these e-Gels, I have heard of them but never tried them.

Gato is so sugary, it is not good for long endurance. You have energy peaks and valleys with those simple sugars. Short term, it's not so bad. Normal athletic events aren't really affected by it. The e-Gels are great for long endurance events (biking, running, hiking) if you don't want to carry weighty food. I wouldn't use them for anything other than running and maybe biking. They give you 150 calories, electrolytes, amino acids, and some basic vitamins. Taking one every 5 miles or 45 minutes does the trick.

Too late. Life will be over, then it won't be a satisfying challenge.

If you are running a "Resurrection Day Marathon" you are probably in hell.

Not with shorts like these.
